Methods of biodiversity recording

In March 2016, Chances for Nature member Matthias Markolf visited Lake Indawgyi and conducted training in biodiversity monitoring and environmental education on behalf of Fauna Flora International. The training was attended by Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary rangers and local staff from Fauna Flora International (FFI), Inn Chitu and Friends of Wildlife. Participants learned various biological methods for monitoring wildlife populations during the training. Including, for example, collecting genetic samples, recording calls of Eastern Hoolock Gibbons, or scientifically documenting observations in the field.

Environmental education and strengthening of environmental awareness

In the second part of the training, the currently most important threats to the protection of the Indawgyi Lake area were elaborated together with the local project staff and possibilities and starting points for creating environmental awareness were discussed. At the same time, a survey of the population was started in order to better assess the knowledge and treatment of nature at Lake Indawgyi. The results will be incorporated as activities in the future management plan of the area. In the long term, this should increase environmental awareness among the population and make the inhabitants of the villages around the lake aware of the importance of the lake ecosystem and the surrounding forests.
